Superintendent Dr. Skertich has issued the following call to action for Kahok Nation:
Kahoks,House Bill 1237 is currently under consideration in the Illinois Senate. If passed in its current form, it would directly impact approximately 100 school districts across Illinois, including Collinsville CUSD 10, by restricting the use of Native American names, mascots and imagery – regardless of context, meaning or local history.
We are asking you to contact Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton, who represents the 23rd District, and respectfully urge her not to bring HB 1237 out of committee for a vote in the Senate. If she chooses to move it forward, we ask that she amend the legislation to include language that allows all impacted school districts the opportunity to seek approval from a Native American tribe to retain their current name, mascot and/or logo.
Our school and community take great care in honoring heritage, promoting education and engaging in thoughtful conversation. Our identity as the Kahoks reflects a long-standing tradition rooted in pride, respect and community spirit. We believe in partnership and support an inclusive path forward that values all voices.
WE NEED YOUR VOICE! Call or write Senator Glowiak Hilton today and communicate your opposition to HB 1237.
Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D), 23rd District

When reaching out, please remember to be respectful and professional, but also passionate. YOUR VOICE MATTERS! Together, we can ensure that all school districts are given a fair and meaningful opportunity to honor their history while fostering learning and respect.
