During the summer months, our schools are extremely busy. Even without students in the buildings, our custodians, maintenance crews and contractors are hard at work preparing for the return of students and staff in August.

Their focus is on deep cleaning, maintenance and scheduled building improvements.

While eleven weeks of summer vacation may seem like a long break for students, staff and families, the district uses this entire time to get ready for the upcoming school year and to complete necessary facility upgrades.

In addition to the annual summer work, the district is also launching the first round of projects tied directly to the March 2024 Ballot Initiative. These efforts are focused on improving safety, replacing outdated heating and cooling systems, and increasing accessibility across our schools.

While these projects will take time, the district is committed to completing the improvements supported by our voters and maintaining transparency with the community as progress is made.

There will be no downtime this summer. Improvements connected to the Ballot Initiative will be underway in the following buildings:

  • Dorris Intermediate – Interior and exterior door replacement
  • Renfro Elementary – HVAC upgrades
  • Webster Elementary – HVAC upgrades; interior and exterior door replacement
As with any facility upgrade, some changes will be immediately noticeable, while others such as improved efficiency and comfort, may go unseen by students, staff and the broader community. That’s why it’s essential to keep our community informed about the work being completed through the March 2024 Ballot Initiative throughout each school year.

Thank you for your constant dedication to our students and don’t forget to wear you purple and show your Kahok Pride!

Mark B. Skertich, Ed.D.
