CHS Latin Teacher James Stark Receives National Award for Excellence in Teaching

Collinsville High School Latin teacher James Stark has received the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award (K-12) from the Society for Classical Studies 

SCS is "...the principal membership organization in North America for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, history, material culture and the relationship of Greek and Roman culture to the broader ancient Mediterranean and beyond."  The majority of its members are university, college and school Classics teachers, graduate and undergraduate students, and scholars in other disciplines.

Recipients of the award must demonstrate qualities that include:
  • a commitment in their classroom to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • evidence of improved student learning
  • innovative and creative classroom activity, including forms of assessment that engage a broad spectrum of learning abilities
  • success, size and growth of the classics program and/or community outreach 
  • evidence of creating interest in classical languages and Greek or Roman culture
  • student successes and recognitions
  • advancement of a significant percentage of students to the next level of study
  • professional service and professional development
