Attendance Tips
Communicate with the school: If your child experiences challenges that affect their attendance, please reach out to the school for support and resources. We are your partner and here to help you however we can.
Encourage a love of learning: Foster a positive attitude towards school and learning by engaging in educational activities with your child at home. If there are areas where your child’s school or academic experience can improve, we encourage you to speak with your school principal or educator.
Establish a consistent routine: Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and has ample time to prepare for school each morning. If you need help with providing meals for your child or are in need of transportation, please contact your child’s principal.
Schedule appointments outside of school hours: Whenever possible, schedule doctor's appointments, dental check-ups, and other appointments during non-school hours. Even missing a half day of school for an appointment can be disruptive to your child’s academic experience.

It is important that you contact your child’s school if your child is absent from school.
Here's a detailed breakdown of the steps to report an absence using Skyward Family Access:

Log in:
Access your Skyward Family Access account through the parent portal on your school district's website or via the Skyward Family Access app.

Find Attendance:
On your main dashboard or menu, find and select the Attendance tile or option.

Start a New Request:
Click on the Add Absence Request tab or link to initiate a new request.

Enter Absence Details:
- Dates: Specify the Start Date and End Date of the absence.
- Partial Day: If the absence is only for a portion of the day, deselect the "All Day" box and enter the Start Time and End Time.
- Reason: Choose a reason from the provided drop-down list.
- Comments: Use the comments box to provide any additional information for the school office.
- Attachments: If you have a doctor's note or other relevant document, you may have an option to attach it to the request.

Submit:
Click Save or Submit to send the request to the school's attendance office.
The absence request will initially be marked as "Pending". You'll typically receive an email confirmation of the submission, and another email once the request has been approved by the school.

[School District Name] recognizes that there may be legitimate reasons for absences, such as illness, family emergencies, or religious observances. Parents/guardians are required to provide documentation to excuse absences. Documentation must be submitted within [##] of days after the absence occurs.
A student absence is considered excused under the following circumstances:
- Illness
- Family emergency
- Death of a family member
- Medical or dental appointment
- Pre-approved educational travel (not to exceed [##] days)
- Pre-approved religious instruction (not to exceed [##] hours/year)
- Bona Fide religious holiday
- Pre-approved tutoring exception (see Policy for details)
- Court hearing
- Dismissed from school by a school nurse or administrator
- Care provided by a licensed health care or therapy practitioner
- Parent deployed for or on leave from combat posting
- “Rare and extraordinary circumstances” approved by the Superintendent (this is very narrowly defined)

An unexcused absence will be assigned for any absences in which the parent/guardian does not notify the school attendance office.
Absences that are not due to illness must be pre-arranged with the principal, if possible, and may or may not be excused.
Students will not be allowed to make-up work missed due to an unexcused absence.
The following acts (even with parental consent) are considered an unexcused absence:
- Failure to attend in-school supervision and/or Short-Term Option Program (STOP) and subsequent days of non-attendance (after 10 days in a semester) shall be considered unexcused unless accompanied with written documentation from their health care provider (with the dates of the absence).
- If a student with a disability has been absent without valid cause for 10 consecutive days, the District will convene an IEP/504 meeting to ascertain the reason for the absences, whether the nonattendance is related to the student’s disability, and if appropriate, a plan to stop the recurring nonattendance of the student.
- If a school has been notified by a parent/guardian that a student will be on an extended trip taking the student out of school for more than 10 consecutive days, such student may be withdrawn from Collinsville Community Unit School District #10. The date of withdrawal shall be marked retroactive to the last of attendance. Absences that are not due to illness must be pre-arranged with the principal, if possible, and may or may not be excused.
District Withdrawal of Student Due to Unexcused Absences
Any student who has accumulated 10 consecutive days of unexcused absence with no school contact from a parent/guardian (“lost child,” whereabouts cannot be determined) shall be withdrawn from Collinsville Community Unit School District #10.
The District shall use its best efforts to notify the parent(s), guardian(s), or other person(s) who has charge of a student if the school system plans to withdraw such student (including, calling all known phone numbers, including emergency contacts, and visiting the last known address). The date of withdrawal shall be marked retroactive to the last of attendance.
If a school has been notified by a parent/guardian that a student will no longer be attending, such student shall be withdrawn from Collinsville Community Unit School District #10. The date of withdrawal shall be marked retroactive to the last of attendance.

Chronic absenteeism means that a student misses 10% or more of the school year—about 18 or more days, whether the absences are excused or unexcused. That’s just two days a month, but it adds up quickly.
Students who miss a significant number of school days, regardless of the reason, are considered chronically absent and may face academic and social challenges. The Collinsville School District attendance plan complies with the Illinois School Code Section 105 ILCS 5/26-2A. In accordance with the requirements of The School Code of Illinois and in recognition of the responsibilities imposed upon parents therein, it is the policy of the Board of Education of District No. 10 that students shall attend school during the entire time school is in session and be on time for classes.
