CHS Students 5th in State Finance Challenge

Seniors Charlie Prakit, Ben Carlson, Cadiem Franks and Gabriel Wheeler represented Collinsville High School in the Illinois Personal Finance Challenge (IPFC) finals held at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago.

The team, coached by CHS teacher Vicki Fuhrhop, was one of 10 Illinois schools who made it to the state finals from among nearly 300 teams who initially participated in the competition.

The state finals consisted of individual and team written tests, a case study presentation judged by industry leaders from the financial sector and a final "Quiz Bowl" round of competition.

The Collinsville team placed fifth. West Chicago Community High School advanced to the national challenge. The annual event began in 2009 to bring attention to personal finance literacy. It is presented by Econ Illinois and its' Centers for Economic Education.

According to Econ Illinois, IPFC is a good assessment tool to measure student understanding of key personal finance concepts. The program provides educational resources and curriculum activities to complement teaching materials and recognizes teachers for outstanding practices in teaching these economic education topics.

This yearís event included a press conference announcing a standing partnership between the Illinois State Treasurerís Office and Econ Illinois, crated to help improved financial literacy among Illinois students. Mrs. Fuhrhop was among the speakers at the press conference.
