A student team from Collinsville High School will represent Illinois as national semifinalists in the Technology Student Association’s 2016-2017 LEAP Legacy Chapter Competition.

The Technology Student Association (TSA) is a national, non-profit organization of middle and high school students who are engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Benito Hernandez, Keegan Butcher, Erick Hicks, Trent Pauley, Devan Wallace and Ivan Velasco submitted a 100+ page document in March as part of the competition. They were notified their entry was selected as a National Semifinalist. They will attend the LEAP Legacy Conference in June in Orlando, FL, where ten finalists will be chosen.

LEAP (Leadership. Education. Achievement. Personal Growth) is TSA's comprehensive leadership program. LEAP brings to life the TSA motto, creed, and mission statement: “TSA enhances personal development, leadership, and career opportunities in STEM, whereby members apply and integrate these concepts through intracurricular activities, competitions, and related programs.”

In Orlando, first through third place middle and high school chapters will receive $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively. First through third place chapter winners also will receive trophies on stage at the conference Awards Ceremony.

Since TSA was chartered in 1978, almost 4,000,000 student members have participated through challenging competitions, leadership opportunities, and community service. The Collinsville High School TSA advisor is teacherCindy Bednara.
